Two members of the Maitland Police Department will join a 250-mile cycling journey this spring in Washington D.C. to raise awareness for law enforcement officers lost in the line of duty.
Det. Michael Lozada and Capt. Kevin Plumlee will participate with officers from across the country in the Police Unity Tour – a three-day bike ride from Portsmouth, Va., to the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial and Museum located in Washington. The ride is scheduled in May to coincide with memorial ceremonies for National Police Week.
Lozada and Plumlee started bicycle training last year. They ride at least twice a week, working on increasingly longer trips.
During the Police Unity Tour event, both members of Team Maitland will wear memorial bracelets to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. They also will attend an annual candlelight vigil on the National Mall.
Lozada and Plumlee are accepting donations to help support the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial and Museum. To contribute, please visit https://secure.frontstream.com/police-unity.../team/1025381
The Police Unity Tour started in 1997, when Florham Park (NJ) Police Officer Patrick Montuore organized a four-day bicycle ride with 18 riders. The organization has since grown into 8 chapters consisting of nearly 2,100 members nationwide who make the trip annually. Participants include riders, motorcycles, and support personnel.
